H2S & Total Sulphur Analyzer

Since Sulphur and Hydrogen Sulfide are corrosive gases, their amount in the gas mixture should be measured. Specialized analyzers for oil and gas applications.

Overview

Since Sulphur and Hydrogen Sulfide are very corrosive and destroy equipment, it is important to know this value in natural gas, NGL, LPG, and other streams. Measuring and monitoring H2S can prevent corrosion in process plants.

Measurement Principle

Measuring method is based on ASTM D4048, which is known as Lead Acetate Reaction Rate. Hydrogen Sulfide reacts with acetate smeared on the surface of a tape:

H₂S + Pb(CH₃COO)₂ → PbS + 2CH₃COOH

Then an LED shines a beam of red light on the surface of the tape to determine concentration of H₂S based on darkness of tape.

Total Sulphur Measurement

To measure the amount of total Sulphur, it converts TS to H₂S based on the following reaction, then measures H₂S:

R-S + H₂ + heat → R-H + H₂S
